Our 2023 travels may have been relatively short, but they were filled with unforgettable camping adventures and epic moments that made the journey extraordinary. In August, we set off on a road trip from Kansas City, heading north toward South Dakota to explore the captivating Black Hills. Along the way, we traced the historic path of the Lewis and Clark Trail, immersing ourselves in the same landscapes that early explorers once navigated. We also ventured through the Loess Hills around Omaha, marveling at the unique terrain, and took in the breathtaking beauty of Sioux Falls, with its stunning waterfalls.

Once in South Dakota, we began our adventure in the iconic town of Wall, where we were awestruck by the surreal beauty of the Badlands, with its otherworldly rock formations and sweeping views stretching across the horizon. We then made our way to Custer, nestled deep in the heart of the Black Hills, where we experienced the rich history, abundant wildlife, and iconic monuments that make the region so special. A highlight of this part of our trip was Custer State Park, where we encountered bison roaming freely and took in the majestic granite peaks of the Needles Highway, which provided a dramatic backdrop to the entire area.

As we began our return journey, we had the opportunity to visit several historic sites used by early settlers as they ventured westward. One of the most memorable experiences was canoeing along the serene Niobrara River, designated a National Scenic Waterway, where we immersed ourselves in the peaceful beauty of the river and its surrounding natural landscape.

As we continued through Nebraska, we crossed the vast Sand Hills, where the sweeping landscape of golden grasses and rolling dunes took our breath away. We were deeply moved by the historical significance of the train yards and the canteen girls of North Platte, whose acts of kindness during World War II left an indelible mark on us.

Before returning to Kansas City, we made a final stop at the Nebraska State Fair, where we immersed ourselves in local culture and spent a day enjoying delicious food, lively entertainment, and engaging exhibits. It was the perfect way to cap off an unforgettable journey that seamlessly combined rich history, breathtaking nature, and moments we will cherish forever.
